Friday

The doctors tried a different medication Wednesday and yesterday Trent's rash looked much better.
This medicine is not steroids and is a antibody.
They were going to start reducing the steroids yesterday, which is a good sign.
Please pray that the rash will be gone soon and Trent can go home!

Christmas Eve

The Koontz's wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
Thanks for all your prayers! They work!

Monday, December 23, 2013

Monday

Trent is doing good, but still on the IV steroids.
Looks like we'll be having Christmas at CHOC. We have been so blessed, so not going to start complaining. We have so much to be thankful for!
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers!
Have a very merry Christmas and may God bless your new year!

Friday, December 20, 2013

Friday

Trent is still dealing with GVH rash. He is back on IV steroids and is doing better.
He is feeling good and eating good, but the rash is just hanging on.
Trent will need to be on oral steroids and watched for a couple of days before release.
Please pray for the GVH rash to clear up so he can come home for Christmas.

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Wednesday

The doctors are still watching the rash and adjusting steroids.
They are also watching hydration/electrolyte levels.
The doctors are delaying the release until they are happy with all the above.

Sunday, December 15, 2013

Sunday

Trent has been doing very well this week.
The doctors are just watching the rash and trying to decide when to reduce the steroids.
I believe they were going to try and reduce steroids last night.
They will watch for a day or two after reduction to make sure the rash does not come back and then they can release Trent from CHOC.
The rash is the Graft-versus-host condition between the new blood and old.

Saturday, December 7, 2013

Saturday

Trent's condition is doing very good under the steroids. The rashes are almost gone and the redness/dryness of his face is almost gone as well. This is what the doctors were hoping for.
He is eating more and he is walking.
We are getting hints that they will probably release Trent within the next week.
He needs to get to the point where he is drinking all his fluids versus IV, eating better and going from IV steroids to oral form, then the doctors will release him.
Please pray that this transplant has done what is needed and the cancer is gone.

Tuesday, December 3, 2013

Tuesday

Trent's swelling is almost all gone, but his skin rash is still active.
Steroids have helped with the swelling and doctors say this is the treatment for the rash as well.
Trent's face is red and dry, which is irritating.
These are all part of the Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
Even though GVHD sounds bad, doctors say it have some very positive results. GVHD will hunt down and kill any remaining cancer cells.

Sunday, December 1, 2013

Sunday

Trent has had some swelling of the face and rashes on the skin which turns out to be Graft-versus-host disease. Doctors have treated this with steroids which has reduced the swelling.
He is eating OK, but not a lot.
After a month in the hospital, Trent is tired of being treated, measured, monitored, isolated and diagnosed.
Please pray that Trent finds some peace in all the challenges that come from hospital care.

Thursday, November 28, 2013

Thanksgiving

Trent's ANC is 2044 today! Big number.
He is officially off BMT isolation and he can move about the hospital.
He is also officially grafted, which means the transplant is working.
There will be some long term concerns regarding rejection of some type, but Trent is looking pretty good right now.
His new immune system seems to be fighting off the infection. No real pain or discomfort at this point.
Trent's appetite is still suppressed, but we'll take that considering.
This is a very good Thanksgiving. Lots to be thankful for. Thank God for his allowance of the transplant to take hold and function!

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Wednesday

Trent had another bid day today. ANC was 1134 today!
The transplant seems to really be taking hold.
If Trent has another good ANC day, the doctors will remove him from BMT isolation, which will allow Trent to walk around the 5th floor and get some exercise.
Trent is looking better and his speak seems to be back to normal.
Please pray that there will be no rejections to all this good work in place.

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Tuesday

Trent's ANC was 510 today! Wow!
The ANC number is a calculated number based on the white cell count.
Trent's ANC was 175 yesterday, but we did not get that news.
If he gets good numbers tomorrow and Thursday, the doctors will call the transplant grafted, which means the bone marrow transplant was a success and the new stem cells are doing their job creating cells.
Trent is still working through other issues, but today's news was big!
Thanks for all your prayers! Keep them coming!

Monday, November 25, 2013

Monday

Trent has been getting better.
The swelling in the tongue seems to have gone down. His speech is better.
I don't think he is using the pain medication as much, but he still needs it to get through a meal due to the throat pain.
One of the nurses said on Saturday that she though his white count may be measurable, but another nurse said that it's still too early to tell. It still sounded good to hear someone say that the transplant was working, regardless if it was real, or not.

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Thursday

Trent still has mucositis and probably will for a couple weeks until the white cell count goes back up.
He's on antibiotics, but the immune system needs to be stronger to get rid of this infection.
His tongue is swollen due the infection, so his speech is difficult.
He's got control of the pain medication through a push button. He does not use it until he needs it.
All in all, he's going good. Getting lots of sleep. He's getting three milk shakes a day down even with the throat pain.
Please keep praying for his speedy recovery and the transplant to take hold.

Sunday, November 17, 2013

Sunday

Trent is dealing with throat issues caused by the chemo and radiation. It's call mucositis.
Its causing pain and Trent is on a drip pain medication so he can eat and relax.
He's able to get shakes from the "shakes menu".
He's also on antibiotics for the throat as well.
Trent's working through each issue, step by step, but it's wearing me out!
It's still been a good week, even with the issues. That BMT was very special!

Thursday, November 14, 2013

Thursday

Trent has been doing well since the BMT.
His counts actually went down today, which the nurse says is still delayed effects of the chemo from last week. They actually like to see this drop knowing that the chemo did it's job and cleared the way for the BMT.
Trent's appetite has been low and he needs to eat more. This really helps the BMT speed up the process.
We talked to a young man who got out of CHOC in 22 days by eating even when he was not hungry and had sores in his mouth. Trent is scheduled for around 6 weeks.

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Wednesday

Trent's BMT went very well last night.
They started early and received a "large" bag/gift/donation from Trent's donor. May God bless the donor for his gift!
They started around 9:30pm and got done after 11pm. Big bag!
The doctors and nurses said that the donor did not have his "harvest" done through the hip. This harvest was done through a IV, into a centrifuge where the stem cells were collected, then the remaining cells were returned to the donor in another IV. This is common when collecting from a adult. The collection takes 4 to 5 hours.
Trent was very sleepy during the BMT. He was given Benadryl as a pre-medicine for the BMT and that makes him tired. He also had the chills. The donation was still cool from being in a cooler during transportation.
Trent's main nurse studied under Dr. Robert Good, who performed the first bone marrow transplant in 1968. She was very educational during the whole evening.
Thanks for all the prayers! This has been quite a blessing and there is many weeks of recovery left, but it nice to have the chemo and radiation behind us.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Tuesday = BMT Day!

Well, day is the day for the bone marrow transplant.
We are very excited and very optimistic. God is with us.
Trent has been dealing with some of the effects of radiation, but looked in very good spirits yesterday.

The transplant is scheduled for 10pm tonight, but the doctor said yesterday that it could be anytime after 10pm. Those guys at CHOC are never in any big hurry, and that's OK. They have many kids with some really big needs. When you pray for Trent today, please add a little prayer for all the kids at CHOC and the donor too! After 15 months of dealing with cancer, we have seen so many kids/familys that have lots of challenges. We have also seen some people with some really big hearts, the doctors, nurses, our donor and Trent's teacher's, Liz and Brent, have all gone out of their way to care for Trent particular needs. Our family, friends and church family continues to provide meals, prayers and support so that we are never alone during this challenge. Our God has always been with us every step of the way and we are encouraged by His constant presence.

The BMT recovery will take several weeks so please pray for Trent's body to take in his transplant and recover without rejection.

Monday, November 11, 2013

Monday

Trent is done with chemo!
Trent is done with radiation!
The bone marrow transplant is tomorrow.
The transplant is scheduled for 10pm.
Please pray that donor has a peaceful next couple of days. I pray that the pain will be minimal for him.
He is a male and 41 years old. That's all we know.
We will not know him for a least one year and only if both parties consent, will we get to meet him.
Please pray that Trent's body will accept this gift and allow it to operate.
Trent has always been and will always be in God's hands!

Sunday, November 10, 2013

Sunday

Trent is done with radiation.
He started chemo yesterday and the last dose will be today.
So after today, I believe he is completely done with chemo. Forever! May God bless what has been done!
Trent got a little sick last night and maybe once or twice this week, but all in all, he's done well by staying active by walking around CHOC and keeping a good attitude.
Tomorrow Trent will start a medication that will help the effects of transplant.
Today is day 2.

Thursday, November 7, 2013

Thursday

Trent had two sessions of full body radiation yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The treatments give him a headache, but the nurses gave him medication for that.
He deals with it by taking naps and staying quiet. He's doing OK.
He'll finish up the radiation on Friday, then two days of chemo on Sat and Sun.
We are at day 5.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Tuesday

Trent has been doing well.
I don't think he is getting used to the new chemo as much as having it delivered over 8 hours versus 4 hours has helped him tolerate it better.
Trent and his teacher are all set up to Skype the classes that Trent needs to keep him going in his senior year.
Trent's teacher is just a great person who has done many work-arounds to keep Trent's classes schedule going.
She is willing to even work through the holidays to keep Trent on track.
We are now at day 7.

Sunday, November 3, 2013

Sunday

Trent had a challenging day on Friday.
He got a new set of tubes installed and they started a type of chemo.
It was delivered too fast and Trent got the shakes/chills and got sick. They were also trying to do a ultrasound at the same time. And he was hook up to heart rate and blood pressure monitors.
One of the doctors came in and stopped the ultrasound, stopped the chemo and waited until the chills stopped.
They restarted the chemo at a slower pace and Trent was able to tolerate that rate.
Saturday he seemed more stable and was sleeping most of the day.
Today is day 9, I think, so he still has lots of chemo and body radiations prior to transplant.
Please pray that Trent stays comfortable during these next several days.

Friday, November 1, 2013

Friday

Trent checked into CHOC this morning.
The countdown has begun. This is day 11.
He'll get another IV tube implanted and a stomach ultrasound is scheduled for this afternoon.
Trent got thru radiation this week with no ill effects.
He was in good spirits last night.

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Wednesday

Trent started his radiation treatment this week.
He has treatment Mon thru Thur and checks into CHOC on Friday.
The radiation treatments are very short and have not seemed to cause any effects.
Trent will continue to have radiation and chemo treatments while at CHOC.
I think he gets a day off the day before the transplant.
The transplant is scheduled for 11/12.
Trents spirits are high this week.

Friday, October 25, 2013

Friday

We had our BMT meeting yesterday and Trent's doctor needed to go over all the worst case effects of radiation, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants.
Not a real fun meeting, but Trent signed all the consent forms and we are on schedule to start the out patient radiation treatments next week prior to checking into CHOC on Friday 11/1/13.
Friday will start the 11 day countdown to the BMT on 11/12/13.
The donor will be giving his donation on the same day. Must be local??
Trent was depressed yesterday.
Talking about survival rate percentages and scheduling that does not get Trent back to VPHS until late in the semester just did not lift his spirits.
Please pray that Trent will find some way to take count of the blessings that he has been given in his local hospital, caring doctors and nurses,a donor that was found the first day of reviewing the database, family/friends/church that love him dearly and a God that will never let him down.

Friday, October 18, 2013

Friday

Trent's counts were up yesterday and the doctors have put him back on schedule.
I need a updated schedule, but I believe Trent will check into CHOC on Nov 1 to start the count down treatment to a Nov 12 transplant.
Trent will get some outpatient radiation treatments prior to Nov 1.
Please pray for Trent's new radiation treatments. He has not had radiation before.
Please pray for Trent's donor that their schedule and donation go smoothly. What a gift!

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Thursday

Trent goes in for blood tests today.
We'll know today or tomorrow if Trent is back on schedule for BMT.
He's doing great and feeling good these days.

Monday, October 14, 2013

Monday

Trent's white count is low, so the doctors have requested to push out the Bone Marrow Transplant one week to 11/12.
Going into CHOC and all other schedules get delayed by one week which is fine. Happens all the time.
Trent got his motor into the Willys yesterday. I'll post some pictures later today.

Saturday, October 5, 2013

Saturday

Trent's test went well yesterday. He needed some platelets as well
We getting the motor in the Willys today and Trent is working on the welding talents.

Friday, October 4, 2013

Friday

Trent is doing very well. Lots of energy.
He has several tests today and next Tuesday to get ready for the Bone Marrow Transplant.
The BMT is scheduled for Nov 5 and it looks like that date is firming up.
I got a email from the BMT coordinator today and she said that
"the donor, in conjunction with the Donor Center and Collection Center are working diligently toward this date".
Trent will need to go into CHOC around 8 days prior to 11/5 to start the preparations.
Keep the prayers coming for Trent and his donor!

Friday, September 27, 2013

Friday

Trent is home. He cleared his blood counts yesterday. Very quick.
The very tentative schedule for his Bone Marrow Transplant is Nov 5.
Trent will need to go through several tests and around 10 days of prep for the BMT.
He was feeling pretty good last night after his last treatment week.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Wednesday

Trent should be done with chemo for this week.
He has been sleeping alot during chemo treatment, which is OK.
The doctors will watch him closely to make sure he gets the chemo out of his system, then he'll get released from CHOC.
The BMT coordinator stop by yesterday with our 20lb "notebook" that gives us all the info for Trent's transplant.
It's going to be a intense process, but we are blessed with a donor , a hospital, doctors & nurses and the grace of God.
Keep Trent in your prayers!

Saturday, September 21, 2013

saturday

Trent made his blood counts on Friday, so he'll be in choc on Monday for his last treatment.
We should know next week the schedule for his bone marrow transplant.

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Tuesday

Trent's platelets are still too low.
He'll get retested on Friday for possible Monday visit to CHOC.

Monday, September 16, 2013

Monday

Trent goes in for blood tests this morning.
If he meets the blood counts, he'll be admitted to CHOC for treatment.
This week's treatment will be Trent's last treatment for this 5 week period.
Should be making plans for Trent's Bone Marrow Transplant soon.
His current health and energy is very good.

Monday, September 9, 2013

Monday

Trent is doing very well over the last week.
He has lots of energy and school has started with lots of home work.
Trent had blood work done this morning to check if he is OK to go into CHOC tomorrow.
Kristie just called and said the platelets were too low, so no chemo this week.
There is one more chemo treatment in this 5week session and then CHOC will use some sort of chemo to prepare Trent for his bone marrow transplant.
The BMT will be sometime around the first of October.

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Tueday

Trent has been doing real well.
His red count was down last Friday and he got a transfusion, but the white count has high.
Trent went to church on Sunday and went to Knott's with Grant and some friends yesterday.
School has started, so homework has started as well.
He has two days of chemo for September, but that's the last of the treatment schedule.
Then we wait the transplant to be scheduled.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Wednesday

Trent has been doing great since coming home Saturday.
He went to church on Sunday, school started on Monday and he and Grant went to the youth group pool party last night.
Trent has a one day treatment coming up the second week of September, but he has lots of time off chemo the next month.
Keep the prayers coming. Transplant should be late September or early October.

Saturday, August 24, 2013

Saturday

Trent got released today! He is home.
He seemed to take this treatment real well.
He has one day of treatment over the next four weeks.
It's going to be a good month!

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Thursday

Trent is doing well in this treatment session.
The chemo is on the lighter side and it does not seem to knock him out like the others.
He does not have to make blood count to be release, so he will go home on Saturday.
He will have one more treatment after this week, but he pretty much gets the next four weeks off.

Monday, August 19, 2013

Monday

Trent had a great weekend.
We celebrated his birthday on Friday and went to dinner, we went to a car show & went to the Peterson museum on Saturday and they went to Disneyland all day on Sunday.
Today Trent goes in for his last chemo treatment on the 5 week schedules.
Not sure how long he will be in on this treatment, but I would guess one to two weeks.

Friday, August 16, 2013

Friday = Happy Birthday!

Today is Trent's birthday. Happy Birthday Trent!
Trent has been doing real well this week.
He went to youth group on Tuesday night, he went to the food trucks on Wednesday night to listen to Ed and Roxanne, he went to the beach on Thursday, he has plans to go to Santa Barbara for a car show and also Disneyland plans.
It's a good week to be Trent!

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Tuesday

Trent has been doing very well since getting home from CHOC.
The doctors have OK'd the delay for the next treatment so Trent can enjoy his 18th birthday.
The next treatment is a lighter chemo and the stay at CHOC should be short.
The bone marrow transplant should be towards the end of September.

Saturday, August 10, 2013

Saturday

Trent is out of CHOC.
He will be on antibiotics for awhile and we delayed his nest treatment until the 19th.

Friday, August 9, 2013

Friday night

Trent has pneumonia.
It's not real bad, but he will need to be at CHOC for at least 48 hours.
He's not real happy about going back to CHOC, but that's understandable.
Please pray that Trent's spirits stay inline through these challenges.

Friday

Trent developed a fever yesterday over 101.
We had to readmit him back to CHOC for a 24 to 48 hour observation.
Standard procedure for fevers is antibiotics, blood work and cultures.

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

Wednesday, again

Trent got released and he is at home!

Wednesday

Trent's count went to 1200 yesterday!
Nurses said that if all goes well, Trent will be released today!
It's been a long month.
Thanks for all your prayers. Keep them coming. We will start the third 5week session soon and then bone marrow transplant.

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

Tuesday

Trent's ANC went to 500 yesterday! WOW!
The doctors will want to see that maintain around 500 for a day or two before releasing Trent from CHOC.
He had a fever the night before last, but no fever yesterday. So the doctors will also continue to review that he does not have fevers.
Thanks for all your prayers! Keep um coming!

Monday, August 5, 2013

Monday

Trent's ANC (kind of white count) number was 24 yesterday. Up from 8 on Saturday.
So he is doing better.
He needs to be around 500 to be released from CHOC.
He needs to be over 250 to have visitors.
He needs to be over 1500 to go to public places.
Please pray that Trent's blood counts gain strength!

Sunday, August 4, 2013

Sunday

Trent's white counts are slowly going up.
He has been getting platelets and whole blood this week.
His energy level is slowly getting better. Kristie and Trent played ping-pong yesterday.
It's a slow process, but Trent should be released soon.

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Wedesday

Trent looked really good yesterday.
He walked with me down to first floor and got a little exercise.
His white counts are still down, but they will go up soon.

Monday, July 29, 2013

Monday

Trent has been doing OK this weekend.
His white counts are still very low, so we need to continue putting a hold on visitors.
The doctors say it could be any time that the blood counts take off and regain their numbers.
Trent is tired these days, but Kristie has got him to eat some this weekend and his eyes are in good shape.
Thanks for all your prayers and keep them coming!

Saturday, July 27, 2013

Saturday

Trent's white counts are very low right now.
We need to put a hold on visitors because Trent's immune system is very weak.
He is on antibiotics and another white blood cell medicine.
Our doctor says that this is a normal reaction to the chemo Trent just had.
It just a matter of time, so please pray that Trent's blood system regains it's strength.

Friday, July 26, 2013

Friday

Trent's eyes looked really good yesterday.
He went to a show in the lobby with guests, so the eyes are improving every day.
We are just waiting for blood counts to increase so Trent can go home.

Thursday, July 25, 2013

Thursday

The doctors have diagnosed Trent's eye pain as conjunctivitis.
This inflammation was brought on by the chemo treatment.
The eye drops that Trent has been getting is the treatment for this condition and he should be fine.
Trent had his eyes opened several times yesterday, so he is getting better.
Trent is done with chemo on this 5 week program, but the chemo has push his blood counts down.
Trent has had a couple of transfusions of platelets this week and at least one transfusion of whole blood.
The doctors will let Trent go home when his blood count goes back up.
Thanks for all your prayers during Trent's struggles!

Monday, July 22, 2013

From Kristie = Monday

Please pray for Trent's eyes!  In the last 24 hours he has been in extreme pain and unable to open them (This is caused by reaction to the chemo).
I would like to share what I learned last week from my Bible study:
There is nothing- No circumstance, No trouble, No testing- That can ever touch me until, First of all it has gone past God and past Christ, Right through to me. If it has come that far, It has come with a great purpose, Which I may not understand at the moment. But as I refuse to become panicky, As I lift up my eyes to him and accept it as coming from the throne of God for some great purpose of blessing to my own heart, No sorrow will ever disturb me, No trial will ever disarm me, No circumstance will cause me to fret- For I shall rest in the joy of what my Lord is- That is the rest of victory.
Please pray for Jerry and I to stand firm in this!

Saturday, July 20, 2013

Saturday

Trent is done with this weeks chemo treatment and is done for the 5 week session.
Yesterday he was alert and done with the weeks cat napping.
The doctors will put him on a white blood count medicine for the rest of the 5 weeks.
Trent will stay at CHOC until the doctors are happy with the white count, probably another week.

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Thursday

Trent started next chemo dose yesterday.
He will probably be very tired and sleeping until Friday.
He seems to be taking this chemo well.
He has been in good spirits and active since Saturday, so this week should be about the same.

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Tuesday

Trent looked really good yesterday. His energy level is up and his spirits are good.
Next round of chemo starts tomorrow. He'll have chemo every 12 hours that will finish up on Friday.
Trent will be very tired and sleep most of the time.
After this round of chemo, the doctors will just wait until his blood count goes back up to release him from CHOC.

Sunday, July 14, 2013

Sunday

It was good to see Trent smile yesterday. What a boost for the heart!
He has been sleeping most of the week. Along with the stronger chemo, I think the medicine for CJE make him tired too.
Kristie got him to sit up and eat fruit which probably gave him some quick energy. His meals have been very small at best this week. Kristie said that later Trent and her walked down to the garden for a while, so he is feeling better.

Friday, July 12, 2013

From Kristie

God is perfect in his wisdom, his ways, and his timing. God doesn't make mistakes and he is always in control. God is the Divine Designer of Trent and knows what he is doing. I trust him in this journey and for  his recovery. This trial that threaten us are actually "overruled" by God. We know that all things work together for good to those who love God.
Without his word right now I don't know what I would do!!!!

Friday

This week Trent was diagnosed with myoclonic juvenile epilepsy. With medicine, this stage can be controlled to stop seizures.
Trent is not in a real good mood right now. This is going to take time.
He has had his chemo for this week. White counts should go down and Trent may not be able to have visitors, but I’ll check today and verify.
This chemo is very strong, but Trent is taking it well with no side effects outside of a headache yesterday. He is sleeping most of the day right now.
Next chemo should be next Wednesday.
This young man is doing well with his fight with medical challenges. I’m sure he is tempted to feel angry and frustrated. Please pray that he finds peace in some fashion while he rearranges his life and looks for courage to battle on an invisible field.

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Wednesday

Trent's tests turned up negitive yesterday, so doctors don't know why he blacked out.
Could be his low blood pressure or the neuropothy medicine Trent is taking.
The doctors are running a sleep deprived EEG today, so Trent will be sleeping most of today to catch up on no sleep last night.
Trent's blood count is up now, so he starts chemo today or tomorrow.
He will be at CHOC for two to three weeks on this 5 week chemo cycle.

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Tuesday

Trent kind of "blacked out" yesterday and his knees gave way.
He's not hurt, but Kristie took him to the ER and they admitted him to CHOC.
He had some twitching of the muscles as well.
They ran a MRI last night and will run a EEG today.
We should know more this afternoon.

Sunday, July 7, 2013

Sunday

Trent had a good weekend!
The motor that Trent blueprinted and assembled started, then blew a fuse, but restarted fine and got burned-in without troubles.
We need to set carbs and timing prior to putting into the wagon.
Trent goes for blood tests tomorrow with maybe back to CHOC on Tuesday.

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Saturday

Trent's Friday white count is still too low at 620.
He'll get tested again on Monday with a possible CHOC visit on Tuesday.
The white count needs to be above 750 to go to the next treatment.
Once again, we are just going to enjoy the weekend at home.
Trent is finished on the motor for the Willys and we will start it on the burn-in stand in the garage so we can tune it up and fix any issues in the garage.

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Tuesday

Trent's white count is still down, so no treatment this week.
He needs to be above 750. Yesterday he measured 500 on his blood tests.
They will test again Friday and possibly to go to CHOC on Monday.
Another week off chemo!

Monday, June 24, 2013

Monday afternoon

Trent is not getting treatments this week. White counts are down. Maybe next week. A little vacation!
He is getting a bone marrow test tomorrow.

Monday

Trent had a good weekend.
He finished the cylinder head and installed it on the motor on Saturday. Almost ready to run!
He ran the video computer at church during service and went to see little bro play a couple basketball games at Azusa. Later on, they went out for lobster dinner!
Trent goes in for blood tests this morning.
If his counts are good, he will go into to CHOC tomorrow for the second 5 week treatment.
There are three 5 week treatments this summer.
The treatment he gets this week will reduce his white count down and he will need medicine to raise the count. Don't be surprise if he cannot see visitors.
Trent will be at CHOC for 2 to 3 weeks.

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Wednesday

Trent finished his first 5 week treatment yesterday. He is done with the steroids! Trent does not like steroids.
Next week will start the next 5 week program if Trent makes his blood counts.
Every 5 week program starts with time in CHOC. This next program might be a 2 to 3 week stay in CHOC.
The chemo on this next treatment will reduce his white count so low that he will need medicine to increase the count.

Wednesday

Last two Mondays, Trent has needed platelets. It's a quick IV and doctors say it's normal.
Trent had treatment yesterday. It went real well. Using Propofol has really help with recovery time and general mood. Trent was very awake and was enjoying shelled peanuts in the surgical gown.
Next treatment is next Tuesday.

Sunday

Trent will attending his grandma's ,Ruby Zagar, memorial service on Thursday evening.
In lieu of flowers, we believe Ruby would want contributions sent to Children's Hospital of Orange (CHOC).
Ruby loved her grandchildren!

Bone Marrow Transplant Results

The tests came back and none of the family is a match to Trent.
The transplant coordinator did a preliminary search and here is her results;
"I ran a preliminary search through the National Marrow Donor Registry (NMDP) and found that Trent has many potential 9 out of 10 donors, which meets our criteria for a suitable donor for BMT".
So we have plenty of donors to begin the formal search.
Thanks to all of you who offered to be a possible donor to Trent. We love you all!

Today Trent's grandma Rudy passed away. Ruby is Kristie's mom.
Ruby was a very special mom, mother-in-law and grandma.
I'll be posting a message from Trent a little later today.
Ruby was strong believer in Christ Jesus and we know she is with Him today and forever.
Thanks for all the memories Ruby! We will remember you always.

Here is a post from Trent;
Today this morning, my grandma, Ruby Zagar, passed away peacefully at Terrace View before she could be transferred to the hospital nearby. She was on her last threads throughout the last two weeks and the whole family believed that she made a considerable effort to keep with us as long as possible with the condition she was in. Through this loss of a dearly beloved part of our family, we learn and become more aware that life has its painful realities that must be faced in order to move on with ourselves and our own spiritual needs and accept the event as a form of adversity through which there is a manifestation of grace. And it is through this grace that we can choose to take advantage of the moment and become "transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Wednesday

Trent did real well at the treatment yesterday.
We were able to do everything as outpatient, so we got home last night.
Trent likes the procedures at the hospital versus outpatient clinic because they use Propofol for anesthesia. He comes out of the procedure very quickly and has no side effects.
He was eating chicken sandwiches in the recovery bed, so you know he was doing good.

Monday

Trent had a real good weekend. Lot's of studies and building his engine for the Willys.
Still no side effects from last weeks treatment and he's eating good.
Trent has blood tests today to make sure his counts are high for tomorrow's treatments.
We do have to checkin to CHOC hospital tomorrow, but it will be outpatient treatment. He'll be back home tomorrow night.
Trent is taking a math final this afternoon. Life is busy.

Friday

Trent has been doing great since he's been home.
His energy has been good.
He had a visit from a nutrionalist named Louie Smith. What a eye opener!
We've done some engine building for the Willys.
It's been a good week.

Trent got released

Trent got released from CHOC this afternoon. We are back home.
We go back next Tuesday for next treatment, but it will be outpatient in the CHOC hospital.

This weeks treatment

Yesterdays treatment went real well. Trent came out of the procedure smiling and chatn with the nurse. He spent most of the afternoon napping. He had more chemo later in the afternoon by IV.
If I read the roadmap right, there is no chemo today, so he's done for the week.
If things go well this week, the doctors might release Trent later on this week and he would do the rest of this sessions chemo through the outpatient clinic.
Please keep your prayers coming in for Trent. We are waiting for donor test results and I know Trent would like to head home.

Tuesday Week2

Trent had a good weekend. Thanks for the visits!
Trent has school from 8 to 10am this morning and Thursday morning. Chemo is scheduled for around noon on Tuesdays. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are probably good days to not visit. He is usually very tired and sleeps during the day.
We should get results back from the donor tests this week. If Grant, Kristie or I are a match, we will be good for the bone marrow transplant. If none of us are a match, we will start the process of finding a donor match. I'll post some good info from Trent's donor coordinator on where to get test kits.

Sunday's visits

Trent got lots of visitors yesterday after church.
Lots of smiles and laughs. It was food for the soul.

Sunday

Today I'll be video recording Pastor Bob this morning so that Trent can view his sermon.
Trent, Grant, Kristie and I attend the Taft Ave Community Church.
Along with the youth group at TACC, Trent also attends youth group meetings at two other local churches.
I cannot say enough about being part of a local church. During the challenges that have faced Trent and his family, our church family have stood by us and supported us like only a family can.
Having God surround this family, has given us peace that Trent is under the ultimate care and love.
Trent has more energy the last couple a days being off chemo. We walked around the hospital yesterday and talked about this upcoming summer and his senior year class schedule.

First week

Trent got through his first week of the new treatment.
His spirits were high yesterday and looks like he's reacting well with a diet of pizza and peanuts. Sounds like my kind of program.
His next dose of chemo will be Tuesday, so he'll have a nice couple of days off treatment.

Donor Testing

We are getting lots of questions regarding bone marrow transplanting and testing for donors.
The coordinator for Trent's transplant has suggested that people might want to wait until after Kristie, Grant and I get tested. If we are not a match, then CHOC will be looking outside the Koontz trio.
We should know soon.
If anyone wants to be a "global" donor, then there's no need to wait.
You have a choice to be private donor, which only Trent's team will receive the data, or you could be on the national/global database and anyone who needs a transplant would be able to receive your gift.

Starting Transplant Process

Trent got through this weeks chemo. Even though we encourage him to eat, he usually does not like to eat during chemo, which might be a good thing? Maybe he knows something we don't? Probably.
Kristie, Grant and I are getting tested for the bone marrow transplant. The coordinator said they are looking at DNA, so it's swab out of the mouth. Sounds easy?
I don't know much about the process, but the transplant needs to happen at the end of the 15 week chemo treatment. I have some close friends who have been through this process and it sounds like a life saver.
Trent's Home Hospital teachers are going to come to CHOC to finish up his junior year studies. His teachers have been a major help in keeping life going while Trent battles the good fight. Thank God for the heart in those people. Trent has school from 8am to 10am today, so it's probably not a good time to visit. The rest of today and the remainder of this week are OK for visiting. Hours are 8am to 8pm.

Wednesday's Treatment

Trent's got one dose of chemo today which should be his last for this week.
Next dose is scheduled for next Tue.
He needs to stay in the hospital so the doctors can review his reactions. So far, so good.
We'll check with Trent today and see when visitors can come.

First Day of Treatment

Trent got 3 doses of chemo in the spinal fluid and 2 doses through IV yesterday.
He was a little tired.
The new tower at CHOC is nice and Trent has a single bed room.
Each room has a bigger TV with Xbox and BluRay player.

Trent's New Treatment

Trent's test from last week shows signs of cancer in the spinal fluid.
He checked into CHOC hospital yesterday and starts a more aggressive treatment.
He will be at CHOC for a couple weeks.
He has three 5 week treatments. The start of each treatment is a couple weeks in CHOC.
After the three 5 week treatments, Trent will get a bone marrow transplant.
At that point, he will be done with treatments and clean from cancer.
